EPUD has received several reports of scams targeting customers in its service area and is urging customers to be cautious.

“These thieves are becoming more advanced with the technology they use,” said Patty Jo Angelini, Emerald People’s Utility District public relations coordinator.

“They can sometimes provide a toll-free number to return the call and/or program the caller ID to make it appear that the call is coming from a utility. We want to make sure our customers know EPUD representatives NEVER require you to make a payment with a prepaid credit card,” she said.

“We care about our customers’ safety and urge them to be cautious of anyone demanding immediate payment by phone. If you have any doubt that the person you’re speaking with is truly an EPUD employee, hang up and call EPUD directly at 541-746-1583,” she said.
