Youth Education Programs:
Let Emerald PUD reinforce concepts and bring lessons to life by presenting in your classroom. We have knowledgeable and engaging staff that would love to teach your students about electrical concepts and the important safety concerns surrounding electricity. We have put together a list of resources and materials that teachers can use in preparation for our visit, as well as activities that can be used as review afterward.
We can also work with you to create a presentation that will meet the needs of your specific topics.
Please view the Classroom Presentations page for more details and for a list of resources. You can also email or call us with questions, or to discuss your individual needs.
We have compiled a number of resources to help teachers create informative and fun lessons centered around the topics below of electrical safety; energy efficiency and conservation; and general electrical concepts. Below you will find links to videos, games, worksheets, activities, labs and more, ready for you to download and use in your classroom.
Electrical Safety Education
In a world where we rely more than ever on electricity to power our electronic devices, appliances, tools, and games, electrical safety becomes an important topic. This is especially true when looking at statistics like these from the Electrical Safety Foundation International.
- Each day, nearly 7 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for electrical shock or burn injuries caused by tampering with a wall outlet.
- More than 30,000 non-fatal shock accidents occur each year.
- Seventy percent of child-related electrical accidents occur at home, when adult supervision is present.
- Each year, there is an estimated average of 60 electrocutions (death caused by electric shock) associated with consumer products. The three most common product categories associated with electrocutions are small appliance, power tools, and lighting equipment.
The resources compiled on this page will help teach students about the importance of electrical safety and tips for how to be safe.
Conservation/Renewable Resources Education
Emerald PUD values sustainability and energy efficiency, including a commitment to conservation and renewable energy resources. We enjoy sharing information on renewable resources (i.e. solar and wind) as well as teaching ways in which people can conserve energy.
Electricity 101: General Electricity Concepts
The concept of electricity may be a bit tough for young students to grasp (you can’t see it or hear it or touch it). The resources on this page will help teach students the basics about electricity.
Arbor Day Power-Friendly Tree Planting Event
In celebration of Arbor Day, Emerald PUD visits one elementary school in our district each year and partners with a class to teach students about the importance of trees and what “power-friendly” trees are. There is a pre-planting lesson with the class, followed by a tree-planting party on the school property. Please contact us if you are interested in participating.
