EmPOWERing Scholarships and Job Shadows
February 20, 2012
Emerald People’s Utility District is offering five $1,250 scholarships again this year to EPUD Customer-Owners interested in pursuing a career in the utility industry. This includes both high school seniors graduating in June, and adults seeking second-career training in the field. Family members of EPUD Customer-Owners will also be considered. For those not sure what the industry is about, EPUD also offers job shadow opportunities.
“This is the fourth year we are focusing energy and funds to build interest specifically in utility careers,” said EPUD General Manager Frank Lambe. “Our industry will see a great shortfall of workers in the coming years and all utilities should do what they can now to ensure our future workforce is trained and ready to take over.”
About half the USA's 400,000 power industry workers, largely baby-boomers, are eligible to retire in the next five to ten years, according to Carnegie Mellon University's Electricity Industry Center. “These are essential, interesting and steady careers, with good salaries and benefits,” said Lambe. “We hope our programs will encourage more people to explore this important industry as a career option.”
Scholarship applications must be received by April 15, 2012, to be considered. Recipients will be announced in May.
